A Short Talk About Selling Gold, Jewellery, and Watches
I want to talk about a very sensitive subject and maybe bring about some financial help or good memories.
We all have some old, broken, or out-of-fashion jewellery taking up space at the back of that dresser drawer; or perhaps you inherited some jewellery from a mother or grandmother, and it’s not a style you or your kids would ever wear. Either way, those items sitting unused could potentially be worth thousands of dollars.
If you have inherited or are an executor of an estate of a lot mixed jewellery and are confused as to what has value and what is better turned over to Value Village, please call us and book an appointment to simply identify the precious and the fashion jewellery at no charge. Know that in some cases, it may take time and we have the experts and the safe environment to do this.
I want to introduce you to the four “C’s” of using that jewellery: Cash, Credit, Custom and Consignment.
My favourite, Custom, uses that inherited jewellery and gems to create something new that will always remind you of that special person who bequeathed it to you. Russell is a pro at designing on the computer using CAD, a program that lets you see the result before we make anything. Following your approval, the drawings are used in conjunction with one of our milling machines or 3D printers to create perfect pieces.
My second favourite, Credit, allows you to receive maximum value for your gold and jewels to put into something that you love, will wear, and enjoy while reminding you of the people, places, and times you spent together. Whether it's jewellery or a watch, every time you look at it you will think of that special person.
The third option is Consignment, which, while giving you the largest amount of cash, also has a few conditions that need to be met, the first being that the item must be beautiful and desirable in the market. While some “ugly” jewellery still holds high dollar appraisals, this does not make it saleable.
Second, it must be in good condition. We don’t want to sell jewellery that is worn out or broken, as our customers trust we have reviewed and certified all pieces are in good condition.
Third, items must have an independent appraisal to confirm the items’ elements, quality, and value are documented. You cannot use our own appraisals, as this appears to be a conflict of interest. But do not worry if you require one — we can hand deliver pieces to an independent, leading company in Toronto. From this, we can establish an agreed-upon vintage value before cleaning, polishing, and displaying items in one of our eight vintage display cases, as well as on our website www.ancasterjewellers.com. There is also paperwork that will confirm our contract and, in light of recent events, ensure that everything in our store has adequate insurance for the contracted amount.
The fourth "C" of course, is Cash, and for some who have bad memories attached or perhaps just have enough jewellery — they should talk to my wife! — obtaining immediate cash is a desirable option.
In closing, as manufacturers, Ancaster Jewellers are always in need of gold, plus we recycle almost all of the components. As an environmental bonus, all of the gold we use every day to make new jewellery is now recycled gold.
